Artist Statement

Detroit, my home. I began to travel the country and world at 17. Yet, I always returned here. Art and creativity are my life long companions. Color and texture have guided me in my choices. History has always intrigued and fascinated me: what people wore, how they lived their daily lives and how they created their spaces. I see the use of recycled wood to create the framework of the structure. Benches are boxes made of wood planks. The inside of the boxes can be used as storage to hold the hand-hooked cushions and other items, such as hand-woven baskets. Grape vines will attach the grass-woven mats to create the roof. Simple, but strong natural materials like branches used to serve both function and art. Natural dyes used to decorate the woven grass walls. Beauty, function and tradition blended together.
